Drive Pinion Housing and/or Seal Replacement

Removal Procedure
1. Drain the differential lubricant. Refer to Lubricant Change.
2. Remove the torque tube assembly.
3. Remove the drive pinion oil seal (1) from the drive pinion housing and discard.
4. Remove the pinion housing-to-differential bolts (1).
5. Remove the drive pinion and housing assembly (1).
6. Carefully remove the drive pinion housing shim (2) from the differential (3).
7. Remove the O-ring seal (4) from the drive pinion housing and discard.
Installation Procedure
1. Lubricate the O-ring seal with synthetic gear oil GM P/N United States 12378514 Canada P/N 88901045 or equivalent.
2. Using the J 44915, install the oil seal (2) to the drive pinion housing.
3. Install the O-ring seal (4) to the drive pinion housing.
4. Carefully install the drive pinion housing assembly (1) and shim (2) to the differential carrier (3).
5. Notice:
Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
Install the pinion housing-to-differential mounting bolts (1).
Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
6. Lubricate the sealing surfaces of the drive pinion oil seal (1) with synthetic gear oil GM P/N United States 12378514 Canada P/N 88901045 or equivalent.
7. Install the torque tube assembly. Refer to Torque Tube Assembly Replacement.
8. Fill the differential with synthetic gear oil. Refer to Lubricant Change.
