Transmission Replacement



Transmission Replacement (LM4)

Tools Required
^ J21366 Converter Holding Strap

Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the battery.
2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Drain the transmission fluid if necessary.
4. Remove the rear propeller shaft.
5. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.





6. Remove the nuts securing the transmission mount to the transmission support.





7. Remove the transmission support from the vehicle.





8. Remove the transmission mount bolt (1).
9. Remove the transmission mount from the vehicle.
10. Remove the front exhaust pipe assembly.
11. Lower the transmission to gain access to the top and sides of the transmission.
12. Remove the transfer case, if equipped.





13. Remove the range selector cable end from the transmission range selector lever ball stud (6) and the bracket (1).
14. Remove the transmission heat shield.
15. Disconnect the transmission vent hose, the park/neutral position switch connectors, and the main electrical connector from the transmission. .
16. Remove the transmission harness from the retainers.





17. Remove the bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission.





18. Remove the torque converter access plug.
19. Mark the flywheel and torque converter orientation for reassembly.
20. Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts. Use care not to drop the bolts into the bell housing.
21. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission.
22. Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
23. Install a safety chain around the transmission.





24. Remove the nut that secures the filler tube to the bell housing.
25. Remove the transmission filler tube.





26. Remove the remaining nuts, studs and/or bolts that secure the transmission to the engine.
27. Install the J21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
28. Pull the transmission straight back.
29. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the J21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
2. Raise the transmission into place and remove the J21366 from the transmission.
3. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter made during removal. The torque converter must be flush onto the flywheel and rotate freely by hand.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Install nuts, studs and/or bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
Tighten the studs and/or bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).





5. Install the fuel line retaining bracket to the transmission.





6. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts. Use care not to drop the bolts into the bell housing.
Tighten the bolts to 60 Nm (44 lb ft).
7. Install the torque converter access plug.
8. Remove the safety chain from the transmission.





9. Install the transmission filler tube.
10. Install the filler tube nut.
Tighten the filler tube nut to 10 Nm (7 lb ft).
11. Install the transmission vent hose (2), fuel lines, and the wiring harness to the transmission.
12. Install the transmission harness to the retainers.
13. Install the heat shield to the transmission.
14. Install the bolts securing the heat shield to the transmission.
Tighten the bolts to 17 Nm (13 lb ft).





15. Install the shift cable end to the transmission shift lever ball stud (6) and bracket (1).
16. Install the transfer case, if equipped.
17. Install the front exhaust pipe assembly.





18. Install the transmission mount to the vehicle.
19. Install the bolts (1) securing the transmission mount to the transmission.
Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).





20. Install the transmission support to the vehicle.





21. Lower the transmission and remove the transmission jack.
22. Install the nuts securing the transmission mount to the transmission support.
Tighten the nuts to 46 Nm (35 lb ft).
23. Install the rear propeller shaft.
24. Flush the transmission oil cooler and cooling lines at this time, if necessary.
25. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines (4) to the transmission.
26. Lower the vehicle.
27. Connect the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure.
28. Fill the transmission to the proper level with DEXRON(r) III transmission fluid and check for leaks.
29. Road test the vehicle and check for proper operation.

Repair Instructions

Transmission Replacement (LL8)

Tools Required
^ J21366 Converter Holding Strap

Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the battery.





2. Remove the filler tube nut (2) located on the right side of the engine.
3. Remove the filler tube from the stud (1) on the right side of the engine.
4. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
5. Drain the transmission fluid if necessary.
6. If equipped with 2 wheel drive (2WD) remove the rear propeller shaft.
7. If equipped with 4 wheel drive (4WD) remove the transfer case. 8. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
9. Remove the fuel tank shield if equipped.





10. Remove the transmission support.





11. Remove the transmission mount.





12. Remove the catalytic converter assembly.
13. Lower the transmission to gain access to the top and sides of the transmission.





14. Remove the range selector cable end from the transmission range selector lever ball stud (6) and the bracket (1).
15. Remove the transmission heat shield.





16. Disconnect the transmission vent hose (2) from the transmission.





17. Disconnect the main electrical connector from the transmission.
18. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector. .





19. Remove the bolts (2, 3) that secure the fuel line brackets to the left side of the transmission.





20. Remove the torque converter access plug.
21. Mark the flywheel and torque converter orientation for reassembly.
22. Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts. Use care not to drop the bolts into the bell housing.
23. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission.
24. Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.





25. Remove the bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the bell housing.





26. Remove the bolts (1, 2) that secure the coolant pipe to the bell housing.
27. Install a safety chain around the transmission.





28. Remove the remaining nuts, studs and/or bolts that secure the transmission to the engine.
29. Install the J21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
30. Pull the transmission straight back to clear the torque converter.
31. Lower the transmission away from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure
1. Install the J21366 onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
2. Raise the transmission into place and remove the J21366 from the transmission.





3. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter made during removal. The torque converter must be flush onto the flywheel and rotate freely by hand.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Install nuts, studs and/or bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
Tighten the studs and/or bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).





5. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts. Use care not to drop the bolts into the bell housing.
Tighten the bolts to 60 Nm (44 lb ft).
6. Install the torque converter access plug.
7. Remove the safety chain from the transmission.





8. Install the bolts (2, 3) that secure the fuel line brackets to the left side of the transmission.
^ Tighten bolt (3) to 10 Nm (89 lb in).
^ Tighten bolt (2) to 45 Nm (33 lb ft).





9. Connect the main electrical connector to the transmission.
10. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector. .





11. Connect the transmission vent hose (2) to the transmission.
12. Install the transmission heat shield.





13. Install the range selector cable end to the transmission range selector ball stud (6) and the bracket (1).
14. Raise the transmission to the normal installed height.





15. Install the catalytic converter assembly.





16. Install the transmission mount.





17. Install the transmission support.
18. Remove the transmission jack.
19. Install the fuel tank shield if equipped.
20. If equipped with 4WD install the transfer case.
21. If equipped with 2WD install the rear propeller shaft.





22. Flush the transmission oil cooler and cooling lines at this time, if necessary.
23. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines (4) to the transmission.
24. Lower the vehicle.





25. Install the filler tube to the stud (1) on the right side of the engine.
26. Install the filler tube nut (2).
Tighten the nut to 10 Nm (7 lb ft).
27. Connect the battery.
28. Fill the transmission to the proper level with DEXRON(r) III transmission fluid and check for leaks.
29. Road test the vehicle and check for proper operation.
