Cylinder Head Installation - Left1. Install the knock pin (2) to the cylinder block.
2. Apply sealant (4) to the cylinder head gasket (1) as shown.
3. Install the cylinder head gasket to the block with the SOFA mark (3) facing up.
4. Install the cylinder head to the block.
Important: The cylinder head bolts must be torqued in 2 stages, loosened, and then retorqued in 3 stages in order to ensure against compression and coolant leaks.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
5. Apply clean engine oil to the bolt threads and install the cylinder head bolts.
Notice: In order to prevent warpage of the cylinder head, follow the sequence shown whenever removing or installing the head.
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts (1-8) in the sequence shown to 53 Nm (38.5 ft. lbs.).
6. Tighten the cylinder head bolts (1-8).
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts (1-8) in the sequence shown to 84 Nm (61 ft. lbs.).
7. Loosen the cylinder head bolts in the reverse order to 0 torque.
8. Tighten the cylinder head bolts (1-8).
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts (1-8) in the sequence shown to 53 Nm (38.5 ft. lbs.).
9. Tighten the cylinder head bolts (1-8).
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts (1-8) in the sequence shown to 84 Nm (61 ft. lbs.).
10. Tighten the cylinder head bolts (1-8).
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts (1-8) in the sequence shown to 105 Nm (76 ft. lbs.).
11. Install the hex bolt (1).
- Tighten the bolt to 11 Nm (7.5 ft. lbs.).
12. Install the water crossover pipe.
13. Install the lifters.
14. Install the camshafts.
