Cylinder Head Replacement- RightRemoval Procedure
1. Remove the camshafts.
2. Remove the lifters.
3. Remove the exhaust manifold.
4. Remove the water crossover pipe.
5. Remove the hex bolt (1).
6. Remove the cylinder head bolts in the proper order.
7. Remove the cylinder heads.
8. Clean the cylinder head mating surface.
9. Clean the cylinder block mating surface.
10. Clean the cylinder head bolt threads and bolts. Replace any stretched or damaged bolts.
11. Clean the cylinder block bolt holes of all debris, threadlocker, sealant etc. Installing a bolt to a blocked bolt hole will cause incorrect torque and may cause cylinder head/block damage.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the knock pin (3) to the cylinder block.
2. Apply sealant (2) to the cylinder head gasket (1) as shown.
3. Install the cylinder head gasket to the block with the SOFA mark facing up.
4. Install the cylinder head to the block.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
Notice: In order to prevent warpage of the cylinder head, follow the sequence shown whenever removing or installing the head.
Important: The cylinder head bolts must be torqued in 2 stages, loosened, and then retorqued in 3 stages in order to ensure against compression and coolant leaks.
5. Apply clean engine oil to the bolt threads and install the cylinder head bolts.
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown to 53 Nm (38.5 ft. lbs.).
6. Tighten the cylinder head bolts.
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown to 84 Nm (61 ft. lbs.).
7. Loosen the cylinder head bolts in the reverse order to O torque.
8. Tighten the cylinder head bolts.
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown to 53 Nm (38.5 ft. lbs.).
9. Tighten the cylinder head bolts.
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown to 84 Nm (61 ft. lbs.).
10. Tighten the cylinder head bolts.
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown to 105 Nm (76 ft. lbs.).
11. Install the hex bolt (1).
- Tighten the bolt to 11 Nm (7.5 ft. lbs.).
12. Install the water crossover pipe.
13. Install the exhaust manifold.
14. Install the lifters.
15. Install the camshafts.
