Cosmetic Rust on Front Bumper (Paint Affected Areas)

2003-2004 Chevrolet Silverado

This bulletin is being revised to change model year information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 03-08-62-003A (Section 08 -- Body and Accessories).

Condition
Some customers may comment that the front bumper is rusting around the air flow holes or the license plate holes.

Cause




The lack of chrome on the sharp edge of the bumper around the air flow holes and license plate holes may cause this condition. Refer to the illustration above.

Correction
1. Raise the vehicle to a good working height.
2. Clean any rust film off the bumper.




3. With a small fine flat file, file down the INSIDE edge of the bumper at a 10 degree angle (Just break the edge). Refer to the illustration above. A half round file will be needed for the curved area of the bumper.




4. Using 6.35 mm (1/4 in) fine line tape, run a clean line 1.6 mm (1/16 in) out from the edge that was just filed. Refer to the illustration above.
5. Wipe clean with an alcohol-based cleaner.
6. File the license plate holes at this time.
7. Wipe clean with an alcohol-based cleaner.
8. Tape around the outboard edge of the license plate holes.
9. Apply the Vinyl Etch Primer and allow to dry making sure that the filed edge has been covered.
10. Apply the Epoxy Primer and allow to dry.
11. Apply a single-stage black paint over the primer.
12. Remove the tape after the paint cures and clean any paint that may have wicked under the tape.
13. Clean the bumper.
