Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

Catalytic Converter Replacement

Removal Procedure
1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Support and raise the transmission using a suitable transmission jack.





3. Remove the transmission mount nuts.





4. Remove the transmission support nuts and bolts.
5. Remove the transmission support from the vehicle.





6. Disconnect the oxygen sensors electrical connectors.
7. Remove the catalytic converter nuts.
8. Remove and discard the exhaust manifold seals.





9. Remove the exhaust muffler nuts.
10. Remove catalytic converter.
11. Remove and discard the catalytic converter gasket.

Installation Procedure





1. Install a NEW catalytic converter gasket to the converter.
2. Install catalytic converter.
3. Loosely install the exhaust muffler nuts.
4. Install NEW exhaust manifold seals.
5. Loosely install the catalytic converter nuts.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





6. Tighten the catalytic converter and exhaust muffler nuts.
6.1. Tighten the catalytic converter nuts to 64 Nm (47 ft. lbs.).
6.2. Tighten the exhaust muffler nuts to 64 Nm (47 ft. lbs.).
7. Connect the oxygen sensors electrical connectors.
8. Install the transmission support to the vehicle.





9. Install the transmission support nuts and bolts.
Tighten the transmission support nuts and bolts to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.).
10. Lower and remove the transmission jack.





11. Install the transmission mount nuts.
Tighten the transmission mount nut to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
12. Lower the vehicle.
