Engine Front Cover Replacement^ Tools Required

Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect both the battery negative cables from the batteries.
2. Remove the generator bracket from the engine block.
Important: When performing this service procedure, it is not necessary to evacuate the air conditioning compressor system. Just move the A/C compressor to the side and secure out of the way.
3. Remove the air conditioning compressor from the engine lift bracket.
4. Remove the engine oil fill tube from the engine front cover.
5. Remove the engine lift bracket from the engine block.
6. Remove the water pump from the engine front cover.
7. Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft.
8. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine front cover.
9. Remove the fuel injection drive gear from the camshaft.
10. Remove the mounting nuts and bolts for the fuel injection pump.
11. Remove the bolts from the engine front cover.
12. Remove the bolts from the oil pan to the engine front cover.
13. Remove the engine front cover from the engine block.
14. Remove the crankshaft front cover oil seal.
Installation Procedure
1. Use the J22102 to install a new crankshaft front cover oil seal.
Important: Make sure that the grooves on either side of the engine front cover are free of oil and dirt before installing the engine front cover.
2. Apply a 2 mm (3/32 inch) bead of gasket maker GM P/N 1052357 to the engine front cover.
3. Apply a 5 mm (3/16 inch) bead of RTV sealant GM P/N 12345739 to the engine front cover sealing surface that mates with oil pan.
4. Install the engine front cover to the engine block.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
5. Install the water pump to the engine block.
Important: Check the marks on the fuel line clips made during removal. Ensure that the fuel line clip are re-installed on the proper studs.
6. Install the engine front cover mounting bolts.
Tighten the bolts and studs to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the bolts from the oil pan to the front cover.
Tighten the oil pan bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
8. Install the fuel injection pump mounting bolts and nuts.
Tighten the bolts and nuts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
9. Install the fuel injection pump drive gear to the fuel injection pump.
Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
10. Install the crankshaft balancer to the crankshaft.
11. Lubricate the new crankshaft sensor O-ring with engine oil.
12. Install the crankshaft sensor in the engine.
13. Install the sensor mounting bolt.
Tighten the mounting bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
14. Install the sensor electrical connector.
15. Install the generator bracket to the engine block.
16. Install the engine lift bracket to the engine block.
17. Install the engine oil fill tube to the engine front cover.
Tighten the oil fill tube nuts to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
18. Install the A/C compressor to the engine lift bracket.
Tighten the A/C compressor mounting bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
19. Connect both the battery negative cables to the batteries.
20. Reset the TDC off set timing procedure.
