Fuel Flow Meter: Service and Repair
FUEL METER BODY ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENTREMOVAL PROCEDURE
An 8-digit part identification number is on a mylar label affixed to the fuel meter body assembly. Refer to the number if servicing or part replacement is required.
1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure.
2. Remove the upper intake manifold assembly.
NOTE: Do not use any solvent that contains Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK). This solvent may damage fuel system components.
3. Before removal, clean the fuel meter body assembly with a spray type engine cleaner, such as GM X - 30A or the equivalent, if necessary. Follow the package instructions. Do not soak the fuel meter body assembly in liquid cleaning solvent.
NOTE: Cover the injector sockets in order to prevent dirt and other contaminants from entering the open fuel passages.
IMPORTANT: When disconnecting the puppet nozzles, remember the sequence in order to ensure correct puppet nozzle placement to each cylinder.
4. Squeeze the puppet nozzle locking tabs together while lifting the nozzle out of the casting socket.
5. Remove the fuel meter body from the bracket by releasing the lock tabs on the bracket.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the fuel meter body in the intake manifold.
2. Push the fuel meter body into the bracket. Make sure all of the tabs are locked into place.
CAUTION: Verify that the puppet nozzles are firmly seated and locked in their casting sockets in order to reduce the risk of fire and personal injury. An unlocked puppet nozzle could work loose from its socket and produce a fuel leak.
IMPORTANT: The fuel meter body assemblies are numbered in order to indicate the puppet nozzle order.
3. Push the puppet nozzles into the casting sockets.
4. Inspect the puppet nozzles in order to ensure the nozzles are firmly seated and locked in the casting sockets.
5. Install the upper intake manifold assembly.
6. Tighten the fuel filler cap.
7. Connect the negative battery cable.
8. Test for fuel leaks using the following procedure:
8.1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF, for 2 seconds.
8.2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
8.3. Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
8.4. Inspect for fuel leaks.
