Timing Cover: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure





1. Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
2. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (Without Oil Cooler) or Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (With Oil Cooler).
3. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
4. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
5. Remove the power steering pump with lines. Move the power steering pump aside. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
6. Disconnect the thermostat bypass pipe from the engine front cover. Refer to Thermostat Bypass Pipes Replacement in Cooling System.
7. Disconnect the radiator outlet hose from the front cover. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement - Outlet in Cooling System.
8. Remove the coolant pump pulley. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Cooling System.
9. Remove the upper crankshaft position sensor wiring harness bracket from the engine front cover.





10. Remove the lower crankshaft position sensor wiring harness bracket from the engine front cover.





11. Remove the engine front cover bolts (1), (2), and (3).
12. Remove the engine front cover.
13. Remove the engine front cover gasket.
14. Clean the engine front cover and engine block gasket sealing surfaces. Refer to Engine Front Cover Clean and Inspect.
15. Inspect the engine front cover for damage to the engine front cover, crankshaft front oil seal or the gasket sealing surface. Refer to Engine Front Cover Clean and Inspect.





16. If you are REPLACING the engine front cover, remove the drive belt shield.
17. If you are REPLACING the engine front cover, remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine front cover. Refer to Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Replacement (24X CKP Sensor) or Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Replacement (7X CKP Sensor) in Computers and Controls.
18. If you are REPLACING the engine front cover, remove the coolant pump from the engine front cover. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Cooling System.

Installation Procedure





1. If removed, install the coolant pump to the engine front cover. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Cooling System.
2. If removed, install the crankshaft position sensor to the engine front cover. Refer to Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Replacement (24X CKP Sensor) or Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Replacement (7X CKP Sensor) in Computers and Controls.
3. If removed, install the drive belt shield.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Install the drive belt shield bolt.
^ Tighten the drive belt shield bolt to 10 Nm (89 lb in).





5. Install the engine front cover gasket.
6. Apply sealer GM P/N 12346004 or the equivalent to both sides of the lower tabs of the engine front cover gasket.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





7. Install the engine front cover.
8. Install the engine front cover bolts (3).
^ Tighten the bolts (3) to 55 Nm (41 lb ft).
9. Install the engine front cover bolt (1).
^ Tighten the bolt (1) to 47 Nm (35 lb ft).
10. Install the engine front cover bolts (2).
^ Tighten the bolts (2) to 21 Nm (16 lb ft).





11. Install the lower crankshaft position sensor wiring harness bracket to the engine front cover





12. Install the upper crankshaft position sensor wiring harness bracket to the engine front cover
13. Install the coolant pump pulley. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Cooling System.
14. Connect the radiator outlet hose to the coolant pump. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement - Outlet in Cooling System.
15. Connect the thermostat bypass pipe to the engine front cover. Refer to Thermostat Bypass Pipes Replacement in Cooling System.
16. Install the power steering pump with lines. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
17. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
18. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
19. Fill the engine with NEW engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (Without Oil Cooler) or Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (With Oil Cooler).
20. Fill the cooling system with engine coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
