Inter-Axle Differential Lock System Operation
Inter-Axle Differential Lock Switch
The inter-axle differential lock switch is mounted to the exterior dash panel.
When the inter-axle differential lock control valve lever is in the ON position, the inter-axle differential lock switch is closed. This condition completes the electrical circuit to the differential lock indicator lamp.
When the inter-axle differential lock control valve lever is in the OFF position, the inter-axle differential lock switch is opened. This condition interrupts the electrical circuit to the differential lock indicator lamp.
Inter-Axle Differential Lock Control Valve
The Bendix(R) TW-1 inter-axle differential lock control valve is mounted in the instrument panel.
Moving the differential lock control valve lever to the ON position engages the inter-axle differential lock. This condition allows the torque to be transmitted to both rear axles without inter-axle differential action.
Moving the differential lock control valve lever to the OFF position disengages the inter-axle differential lock. This condition allows the torque to be transmitted to both rear axles through inter-axle differential action.
Inter-Axle Differential Lock Pressure Protection Valve
The differential lock pressure protection valve is mounted to the brake pedal bracket.
The differential lock pressure protection valve is a normally closed pressure sensitive type control valve.
The differential lock pressure protection valve protects the vehicle's air system if a failure occurs in the inter-axle differential lock air system.
Inter Rear Axle Differential Air Shift Chamber
The inter rear axle differential air shift chamber is mounted to the rear axle power divider, which is mounted to the rear axle differential carrier.
When air pressure is supplied to the inter rear axle differential air shift chamber, the shift fork shifts the lockout sliding clutch. This action engages the inter rear axle differential lockout.
When the air pressure is removed, the compression spring disengages the inter rear axle differential lockout.
