Rear Spring Hanger Replacement
Removal Procedure
1. Set the parking brake.
2. Block the vehicle's rear wheels.
3. Raise the frame until the front tires clear the floor.
Important: Raise the frame high enough in order to allow the spring to clear the rear spring bracket when you lower the axle.
4. Remove the front wheel if necessary.
Notice: Do not use the front crossmember to support the vehicle or the crossmember may buckle.
5. Support the frame using suitable safety stands.
6. Support the axle with a jack.
7. Remove the following components from the lower mounting brackets (7):
* The nut (10)
* The washer (9)
* The insulator (8)
8. Remove the shock absorbers (5) from the lower mounting brackets (7). Push the shock absorbers into the fully retracted position.
9. Remove the following components from the hanger (2):
* The hanger eye bolt nut (4).
* The washers.
* The bolt (12).
10. Lower the axle far enough to allow the spring shackle (8) to clear the hanger and allow removal of the bracket (2).
11. Remove the following components from the side member (3):
* The spring hanger nuts (1, 11).
* The washers.
* The bolts (6,7).
* The spring hanger (4).
12. On vehicles equipped with a diesel engine proceed as follows:
13. Remove the following components:
1. The nuts (3, 9)
2. The washers
3. The bolts (1, 7)
Important: Remove only the nuts (8) and washers from the engine mount bolts which retain the hanger.
4. Slide the hanger (5) off the engine mount bolts (13).
Installation Procedure
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
1. Install the hanger (4) to the side member with the following parts:
* The bolts (6, 7)
* The washers
* The nuts (1, 11)
Tighten the spring hanger nuts to 85 Nm (63 lb ft).
* On vehicles equipped with the a diesel engine, proceed as follows:
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
2. Install the hanger (5) to the side member, sliding the hanger over the protruding engine mount bolts (13).
3. Install the following components:
1. The bolts (1, 7)
2. The washers
3. The nuts (3, 9)
4. The engine mount nuts (8) and washers
* Tighten the spring hanger nuts (3, 9) to 85 Nm (63 lb ft).
* Tighten the engine mount nuts (8) to 70 Nm (52 lb ft).
4. Raise the spring.
5. Guide the shackle assembly (8) into the hanger aligning the holes.
6. Install the following components:
1. The bolt (12)
2. The washers
3. The nut (4)
Tighten the rear spring hanger nut to to 330 Nm (243 lb ft).
7. Install the washer (6) and the insulator (13) if removed.
8. Install the shock absorber (5) into the lower mounting bracket (7)
9. Install the following components:
1. The insulator (8)
2. The washer (9)
3. the nut (10)
Tighten the lower shock absorber nut to 84 Nm (62 lb ft).
10. Install the front wheel if removed.
11. Lower the vehicle.
12. Remove the blocks from the wheels.
