Spring Bushing Replacement (Tandem Axle)

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 21058 Front Lower Control Arm Bushing Service Set




1. Set the parking brake.
2. Block the front wheels.
3. Raise the vehicle frame using a suitable lifting device in order to remove the weight of the vehicle from the spring assembly.
Support the frame rearward of the rear axle.
4. Remove the following components for tapered leaf springs:

* The rear spring hanger rebound nut
* The washer
* The bolt

5. For multileaf springs, remove the rear spring hanger bolt.
6. Remove the following components:

* The lower shock absorber nut
* The washer
* The insulator
* The shock
* The washer

7. Raise the frame slightly.
8. Remove the front spring eye bolt, the washer and the eye bolt.
9. Raise the frame in order to provide clearance between the spring assembly and the hanger bracket.




10. Remove the bushing using the J 21058 .

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 21058 Front Lower Control Arm Bushing Service Set




1. Install the eye bushing using the J 21058 .
2. Lower the frame slightly.
3. Install the following components:

* The front spring eye bolt
* The washer
* The nut

4. Lower the frame until the hanger touches the surface of the rear spring eye.




5. For a tapered leaf spring, install the following components:

* The rear spring hanger rebound bolt
* The washer
* The nut

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

6. Install the following components:

* The lower shock absorber nut
* The washer
* The insulator
* The shock absorber

1. Tighten the lower shock absorber nut to 61 Nm (45 lb ft).
2. Tighten the spring front eye bolt to 415 Nm (305 lb ft).
3. Tighten the rear hanger rebound bolt to 415 Nm (305 lb ft).

7. For multileaf springs, install the rear spring hanger bolt.

Tighten the rear spring hanger bolt. Ensure that a minimum of 84.07 mm (3.36 in) is between the ears (1) of the rear spring hanger.
