Valve Spring: Service and Repair




Valve Stem Oil Seal and Valve Spring Replacement

Removal Procedure

Tools Required
* J 5892-C Valve Spring Compressor
* J 22794 Spark Plug Port Adapter

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement (Negative Cable to Engine) Battery Cable Replacement (Negative Cable to Engine)Battery Cable Replacement (Positive Cable) Service and RepairBattery Cable Replacement (Negative Cable to Frame) Battery Cable Replacement (Negative Cable to Frame) in Engine Electrical.




2. Remove the valve rocker arm cover from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Service and Repair.
3. Rotate the crankshaft until both valves are closed before installing the compressed air into the cylinder being serviced.




4. Remove the valve rocker arm from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement Service and Repair.




5. Remove the valve push rod from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement Service and Repair.
6. Remove the spark plugs from the cylinder head. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement Service and Repair in Engine Electrical.




7. Remove the valve keepers as followed:
8. Install the J 23590 into the spark plug hole.
9. Apply compressed air into the cylinders in order to hold the valves closed.
10. Lightly tap the valve spring retainer to loosen the valve keepers.
11. Install the J 5892-C to the cylinder head.
12. Install the valve rocker arm bolt.
Important: Tighten the valve rocker arm bolt enough to hold J 5892-C in place while compressing the valve and valve spring assembly.


13. Carefully release the spring tension and remove the J 5892-C .
14. Remove the J 5892-C from the cylinder head.
15. Use the J 5892-C to compress the valve spring assembly.
16. Remove the valve keepers.
Important: Do not release the compressed air from the cylinder being worked on. The valve will fall into the cylinder bore.





17. Remove the valve spring retainer (2) and the valve spring (4) from the cylinder head.
18. Remove the valve stem oil seal from the valve guide.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required
* J 5892-C Valve Spring Compressor
* J 22794 Spark Plug Port Adapter

1. Install the valve stem oil seal to the valve guide.
2. Install the valve spring retainer and the spring.




3. Use the J 5892-C to install the valve springs and keepers to the cylinder head.
4. Install the valve keepers to the valve as follows:

* With the compressed air still applied, use the J 5892-C to compress the valve spring assembly.
* Install the valve keepers to the valve being worked on. Apply a small amount of clean grease to hold the valve keepers in place.
* Carefully release the tension on the valve spring assembly. Make sure the valve keepers do not move while releasing the tension.
* Remove the J 5892-C from the valve assembly.
* Carefully release the compressed air from the cylinder being worked on.

5. Install the spark plugs to the cylinder head into the cylinder being serviced. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement Service and Repair in Engine Electrical.




6. Install the valve rocker arms to the cylinder head to the cylinder being serviced. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement Service and Repair.




7. Install the valve rocker arm covers to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Service and Repair.
8. Connect the battery negative cables to the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement (Negative Cable to Engine) Battery Cable Replacement (Negative Cable to Engine)Battery Cable Replacement (Positive Cable) Service and RepairBattery Cable Replacement (Negative Cable to Frame) Battery Cable Replacement (Negative Cable to Frame) in Engine Electrical.
