Timing Cover: Service and Repair
Removal ProcedureImportant: The engine front cover gasket is reusable.
1. Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft.
2. Remove the water pump from the engine block.
3. Remove the oil pan.
4. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine front cover.
5. Remove the engine front cover bolts.
6. Remove the engine front cover and the gasket.
7. Remove the engine front cover seal from the engine front cover.
^ Pry the engine front cover seal out with a screwdriver.
^ Take care not to distort the engine front cover.
8. Inspect the engine front cover and engine front cover gasket for distortion and damage. Replace if necessary.
Installation Procedure
^ Tools Required
- J 22102 Crankshaft oil seal and sprocket installer.
1. Coat the crankshaft front seal lips with clean engine oil.
2. Use the J 22102 to install the new seal.
Important: Apply RTV sealer GM P/N 12345739 to both front corners of the oil pan.
3. Install the engine front cover and gasket to the engine block.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
4. Install the engine front cover bolts to the engine.
^ Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
5. Install the oil pan to the engine block.
6. Install the crankshaft position sensor to the engine front cover.
7. Install the water pump.
8. Install the crankshaft balancer to the crankshaft.
