CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

A fused ignition voltage is supplied to the AIR relay. The Vehicle Control Module (VCM) controls the AIR pump by grounding the AIR relay control circuit. This energizes the relay and supplies voltage to the AIR pump clutch. When the fuel system goes to the Closed Loop mode, the VCM opens the ground to the AIR control circuit.

CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC

AIR Passive Test Enable

^ No Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor DTCs

^ No Idle Air Control (IAC) sensor DTCs

^ No O2S sensor DTCs

^ No Misfire DTCs

^ No Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) DTCs.

^ No Fuel Trim DTCs

^ No EVAP DTCs

^ No Throttle Position (TP) Sensor DTCs

^ No Intake Air Temperature (IAT) DTCs

^ No Mass Air Flow (MAF) DTCs

^ System voltage is greater than 10 volts for a period greater than 3 seconds

^ IAT is greater than 0°C

^ Engine run time is greater than 3 seconds

AIR Passive Test 1

^ AIR pump ON

A/F Ratio is at least 12:1

^ Startup ECT is 56.25°C or less

^ Hot/Cold rich time ratio is at least 0.39 or more

^ Or Hot/Cold lean time is less than 0.60

AIR Passive Test 2

^ AIR Passive Test 1 not run or failed

^ AIR Pump ON

^ O2 sensor 1 is at least than 451 mV or more for at least 5 seconds

AIR Active Test Enable

^ AIR passive tests 1 and 2 failed

^ AIR Pump ON

^ O2 sensor voltage is less than 299 mV

^ No ECT sensor DTCs

^ No IAC sensor DTCs

^ No O2S sensor DTCs

^ Air/Fuel Ratio 14.7:1

^ Engine Speed Above 550 RPM

^ Closed Loop for a period of greater than 15 seconds

^ Engine Load less than 50%

^ MAF less than 100 g/s

^ System voltage greater than 10 volts

^ ECT between 75°C and 105°C

^ IAT is greater than 0°C

^ Integrator is greater than 0.95 but less than 1.0 for 3 seconds

ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS

The VCM will turn ON the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) after two consecutive test cycles with the fault active.

CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE MIL/DTC

^ The VCM turns the MIL OFF after 3 consecutive drive trips when the test has Run and Passed and not Failed.

^ A history DTC will clear if no fault conditions have been detected for 40 warm-up cycles (coolant temperature has risen 22°C (40°F) from the startup coolant temperature and the engine coolant temperature exceeds 70°C (160°F) during the same ignition cycle).

^ Use the scan tool Clear Information function.

^ Disconnect the VCM battery feed for 30 seconds.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS

An intermittent may be caused by a poor connection, rubbed through wire insulation, or a broken wire inside the insulation.

Check for the following conditions:

^ Poor connection or damaged harness - Inspect the harness connectors for backed out terminals, improper mating, broken locks, improperly formed or damaged terminals, poor terminal to wire connection, and damaged harness.

^ Worn or loose AIR pump drive belt.

^ Pinched, kinked, or restricted AIR pipes, hoses, or fittings.

TEST DESCRIPTION

Number(s) below refer to the step number(6) on the Diagnostic Table.

2. This step will determine if the VCM is capable of controlling the AIR system.

5. This step will ensure that the VCM is capable of turning the AIR pump OFF.

9. This step will determine if there is a problem in the circuit between the AIR relay and AIR pump clutch ground.

17. This step will determine if the problem is in the AIR relay control circuit or the VCM.
