Upper Control Arm Replacement
REMOVAL PROCEDURECAUTION: Floor jack must remain under the control arm spring seat during removal and installation to retain the spring and control arm in position. Failure to do so could result in personal injury.
1. Raise the front of the vehicle.
^ Support the lower control arm with floor stands.
^ Because the weight of the vehicle is used to relieve the spring tension, position the floor stands between the spring seats and the ball joints of the lower control arms in order to maintain maximum leverage.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
3. Remove the air cleaner from the vehicle.
4. Remove the brake hose bracket from the upper control arm.
4.1. Remove the nuts and the bolt.
4.2. Tie the hose out of the way.
5. Remove the nut and the bolt that attaches the vehicle speed sensor harness to the upper control arm.
6. Remove the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle.
7. Remove the attaching bolts and nuts of the upper control arm.
8. Remove the upper control arm.
9. Remove the frame knockouts if equipped.
10. Remove the bushings using a press.
11. Inspect all of the parts for wear and damage.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the bushings using a press.
2. Install the upper control arm to the frame.
Important:
^ The pivot bolts must be installed in the proper direction.
^ Tighten the front nut prior to tightening the rear nut.
NOTICE: Always use the correct fastener in the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and joint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and systems.
3. Install the new upper control arm bolts and nuts.
Tighten
^ Tighten the nuts with the control arm at Z height.
^ Tighten the nuts to 190 Nm (140 ft. lbs.).
