Balance Shaft: Service and Repair
REMOVAL PROCEDURE1. Remove the radiator.
Remove the A/C condenser, if equipped.
3. Remove the lower intake manifold.
4. Remove the valve lifter pushrod guide.
5. Remove the engine front cover and the crankshaft position reluctor ring.
6. Remove the camshaft timing chain and sprockets.
7. Remove the balance shaft drive gear.
8. Remove the bolt holding the balance shaft driven gear.
9. Remove the balance shaft driven gear.
10. Remove the bolts and the balance shaft retainer.
11. Tap on the balance shaft using a soft-faced hammer in order to remove the balance shaft. Refer to Balance Shaft Removal under Engine Unit Repair.
IMPORTANT: The balance shaft and the front bearing are serviced only as a package. Do not remove the bearing from the balance shaft.
12. Clean all sealing surfaces. Refer to Balance Shaft Clean and Inspect under Engine Unit Repair.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the balance shaft. Refer to Balance Shaft Installation under Engine Unit Repair.
2. Install the timing chain and the camshaft sprocket.
3. Install the crankshaft position reluctor ring and the engine front cover.
4. Install the valve lifter pushrod guide.
IMPORTANT: When the timing marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets are aligned the engine is at top dead center for cylinder number four. In order to install the distributor align the crankshaft balancer marks with the front cover marks for top dead center cylinder number one.
5. Install the lower intake manifold.
6. Install the A/C condenser, if equipped.
7. Install the radiator.
