Extension and Retainer Housing Replacement (NV231 and NV233)
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT- Raise and support the vehicle.
1. Rear propeller shaft.
2. Bolts and rear extension housing.
3. Rear bearing retainer snap ring.
4. Wiring harness connector to speed sensor.
5. Vehicle speed sensor and O-ring.
6. Rear retainer housing bolts.
7. Rear retainer housing.
8. Seal. Remove the seal with a screwdriver. Do not damage the seal bore.
Clean
- Gasket surfaces with a cleaning solvent.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
- Tools Required:
- J 33843 Rear Output Shaft Seal Installer
1. Rear retainer housing.
- Ensure the gasket surfaces are clean and free of grease and oil.
- Apply RTV sealer the equivalent to the rear retainer housing sealing surfaces.
2. Rear retainer housing bolts.
- Apply threadlocker to the threads of the bolts.
- Tighten bolts to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.).
3. Rear bearing retainer snap ring.
4. Extension housing to the transfer case.
- Make sure the gasket surfaces are clean and free of grease and oil.
- Apply RTV sealer to the rear extension housing sealing surfaces.
5. Rear extension housing bolts.
- Apply threadlocker to the threads of the bolts.
- Tighten bolts to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.).
6. Rear extension seal using J 33843.
- Lubricate the seal lips with petroleum jelly.
7. Speed sensor.
8. Wiring harness connector to speed sensor.
9. Rear propeller shaft.
- Fill the transfer case with oil.
- Lower the vehicle.
