Mainshaft Extension and Rear Retainer Housing

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT





1. Rear extension housing bolts and the rear extension housing.
- Tap the extension housing with- a rubber mallet to free from the sealer.





2. Rear bearing retainer snap ring from the mainshaft.
3. Rear retainer housing bolts.





4. Rear retainer housing from the rear case half.
- Carefully pry upward under each tab on retainer housing.

Important: Do not pry against the sealing surfaces of the rear retainer or rear case. Only pry under tabs on retainer housing.





5. Vehicle speed sensor rotor snap ring from the mainshaft.





6. Vehicle speed sensor rotor from the mainshaft.





7. Snap ring from the mainshaft.
8. Case bolts from the case halves.
- The two longer case bolts and washers go into the doweled case holes.

Important: Some transfer case models have a bracket attached to the case half bolts. These bolts are different from the others and must be put back into the correct holes.





9. Rear case half and oil pump as an assembly from the front case.
- Separate the case halves by inserting screwdrivers into the slots cast into the case ends and pry apart. Do not attempt to wedge the case halves apart at any point on the mating surfaces. Damage to the case may result.
- Be careful not to damage the oil pump (located in the rear case half) while removing the rear case half.
