Removal

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System.





3. Remove the air cleaner intake duct.
4. Remove the distributor. Refer to Starting and Charging.
5. Remove the upper radiator hose at the thermostat housing. Refer to Cooling System.





6. Remove the throttle linkage and bracket from the upper intake manifold.
7. Remove the heater hoses at the lower intake manifold.
8. Remove the transmission oil level indicator and tube (automatic transmissions only).
9. Remove the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) tube, clamp, and bolt. Service and Repair





10. Remove the fuel supply and return lines at the rear of the lower intake manifold.
11. Remove the bolts attaching the air conditioning compressor.





12. Remove the wire harnesses. Include the following items:
^ The central (Sequential Fuel Injector)
^ The EGR valve
^ The engine coolant temperature sensor
^ The Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor
^ The Mass Air flow sensor
^ Distributor spark plug wires
13. Remove the PCV valve and vacuum hose. EGR valve inlet tube from the intake manifold Oxygen sensor wire support bracket and nut Canister purge system tubing
14. Remove the lower intake manifold as follows:





Remove the evaporative (EVAP) canister purge solenoid valve harness.
A. Push the quick disconnect clip and hold in place.
B. Pull outward on the harness elbow.





15. Remove the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor wire connector (if equipped) from the engine wiring harness bracket.
16. Remove the lower intake manifold bolts.

Important: The intake manifold may be removed as an assembly. Do not remove the specific intake manifold components unless service is required.
Do not allow dirt or debris to enter the fuel system. Ensure that the ends of the fuel system are properly asked.
Do not disassemble the Central Sequential Fuel Injection (SFI) unit, unless service is required.
17. Remove manifold assembly.
18. Remove and discard the lower intake manifold gaskets.
