Installation

^ Tools Required
- J 38834 Balance Shaft Bearing Service Kit
- J 36996 Shaft Installer
- J 8092 Driver Handle
- J 36660 Torque/Angle Meter
- Or Equivalents

1. Dip the balance shaft rear bearing in clean engine oil before installation.





2. Install the balance shaft rear bearing. Use the balance shaft bearing service kit.
3. Dip the front balance shaft bearing into clean engine oil before assembly.
4. Install the balance shaft into the block. Use the shaft installer and the driver handle.





5. Install the balance shaft bearing retainer.
6. Install the balance shaft bearing retainer bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).





7. Install the balance shaft driven gear.
8. Install the balance shaft driven gear bolt.
^ Tighten the balance shaft driven gear bolt to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) plus an additional turn of 35 degrees using the torque/angle meter.





9. Install the valve lifter retainer.





10. Rotate the balance shaft by hand in order to make sure that there is clearance between the balance shaft and the valve lifter retainer. Replace the valve lifter retainer if necessary.
11. Turn the camshaft with the balance shaft drive gear temporarily installed. The timing mark on the drive gear must be straight up.





12. With the balance shaft drive gear removed, turn the balance shaft so the timing mark on the driven gear points straight down.





13. Ensure that the timing marks on the balance shaft drive gear and the driven gear line up dot to dot.





14. Install the balance shaft drive gear onto the camshaft.

NOTE: Line up the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket dot to dot. When these marks are lined up dot to dot, the number four cylinder is at the top dead center of its compression stroke. Position the distributor rotor facing the cap hold down mount nearest the flat side of the housing.





15. Install the camshaft sprocket and the timing chain.
16. Install the camshaft sprocket bolts.
^ Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
17. Install the intake manifold.
18. Install the distributor.

NOTE: Use care when engaging the front of the oil pan seal with the bottom of the engine front cover. Lubricate the front of the oil pan seal with engine oil to aid in reassembly.

19. Install the engine front cover.
20. Install the oil pan.
21. Install the water pump.
22. Install the accessory drive pulley.
23. Install the engine cooling fan.
24. Install the air conditioning condenser.
25. Install the coolant reservoir.
26. Install the radiator.
27. Install the air conditioning compressor, the bracket, and the accessory drive bracket.
28. Install the air cleaner assembly and the duct.
29. Connect the negative battery cable.
30. Install the engine cover.
31. Fill the crankcase with the proper quantity and grade of engine oil.
32. Fill the cooling system with the proper quantity and grade of engine coolant.
33. Charge the air conditioning system.
34. Install the coolant reservoir.
