Cylinder Head Removal and Installation
Fig. 9 Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove rocker arm cover.
3. Remove intake manifold, then the exhaust manifold.
4. If removing right cylinder head, disconnect electrical connector from sensor and dipstick tube bracket from cylinder head, then remove A/C compressor and belt tensioner bracket and position aside.
5. If removing left cylinder head, remove power steering pump, brackets and alternator and position aside.
6. Remove spark plugs.
7. Remove pushrods.
8. Remove cylinder head bolts and cylinder head.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Gasket surfaces on both head and cylinder block must be clean of any foreign matter and free of nicks or heavy scratches.
b. Cylinder head bolt threads inside block and on bolts must be clean, as dirt will affect bolt holding strength.
c. Coat cylinder head bolt threads with sealer No. 1052080, or equivalent, and install bolts.
d. Torque bolts in sequence, Fig. 9, in three steps:
- First, tighten all cylinder head bolts to 22 ft. lbs.,
- Then tighten short length bolts (11,7,3,2,6,10) 55 degrees.
- Tighten Medium length bolts (12,13) 65 degrees.
- Tighten Long length bolts (1,4,8,5,9) 75 degrees.
