Timing Chain: Service and Repair

Tools Required:
J 5825-A Crankshaft Sprocket Remover
J 5590 Crankshaft Sprocket Installer






Remove or Disconnect
1. Right front tire and wheel.
2. Crankcase front cover.

Important
^ Align timing marks on cam and crank sprockets using alignment marks on dampener stamping or cast alignment marks on cylinder and case.

3. Place #1 piston at top dead center with the marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets aligned.
4. Camshaft sprocket and chain, see image.

Important
^ Lock crank by freezing flywheel with a prybar before attempting to remove crank sprocket.

5. Crankshaft sprocket with Tool J 5825-A.

Install or Connect
1. Crankshaft sprocket with Tool J 5590.
2. Apply P/N 1052365 or equivalent to the sprocket thrust surface.
3. Hold the sprocket with the chain hanging down and align the marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets, see image.
4. Align dowel in camshaft with dowel hole in camshaft sprocket.
5. Draw the camshaft sprocket onto camshaft using the mounting bolts. Torque to 24 N.m (18 Lb. Ft.).
6. Lubricate timing chain with engine oil.
7. Crankcase front cover.
8. Wheel and tire.
