Throttle Cable/Linkage: Service and Repair

ACCELERATOR CABLE

REMOVAL

1. Remove lower instrument panel trim attaching screws (5) and clip. Partially drop lower instrument panel trim and disconnect courtesy light.

2. Disconnect accelerator cable from accelerator pedal.

3. Squeeze accelerator cable tangs and push cable through the dash panel (bulkhead).

4. Remove air cleaner assembly.

5. Remove accelerator cable retaining clip and accelerator cable from TBI throttle lever.

6. Squeeze and push accelerator cable retaining tangs (2) at the throttle body bracket and remove accelerator cable.

INSTALLATION

NOTE:

a. Use care when pressing the retainer into hole in rod to ensure that the cable is not kinked or damaged in any way.

b. To prevent possible interference, flexible components (hoses, wires, conduits, etc.) must not be routed within 50 mm (2") of moving parts unless routing is positively controlled.

c. Wire, hoses, cables, or other obstructions must not be placed within 13 mm (1/2") of cable or rod at any point in their travel.


1. Connect the accelerator cable to the throttle body bracket.

2. Install accelerator cable and retaining clip to the throttle lever.

3. Install the air cleaner assembly.

4. Feed the accelerator cable through the dash panel bulkhead and snap cable retainers into accelerator pedal assembly bracket.

5. Connect accelerator cable to accelerator control lever.

6. Install vehicle instrument panel lower trim and courtesy light.

7. Check for complete throttle opening and closing by operating accelerator pedal. Also check for poor carpet fit under the accelerator pedal. Throttle should operate freely without binding between fully closed and wide open throttle.

8. Apply heavy bodied sealer around the accelerator cable at the engine compartment side of dash panel bulkhead.

Accelerator Pedal Assembly:






ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY

REMOVAL:

1. Remove lower instrument panel trim attaching screws (5) and clip. Partially drop lower instrument panel trim and disconnect the courtesy light.

2. Remove the accelerator cable from the accelerator pedal.

3. Disconnect stop switch electrical connectors (2).

4. Remove vacuum hose and cruise control switch electrical connectors if equipped with cruise.

5. Remove brake rod attaching nut, washer and rod from brake pedal.

6. Remove accelerator/brake pedal bracket, attaching nuts (4), bolt and accelerator/brake pedal bracket.

NOTE: Support master cylinder and power booster assembly.

INSTALLATION

1. Install accelerator/brake pedal bracket. Tighten attaching nuts to 34 Nm (25 lb.ft.). Tighten attaching bolt to 25 Nm (18 lb.ft.)

2. Install rod into brake pedal. Install washer and nut and tighten to 38 Nm (28 lb.ft.)

3. Connect cruise control vacuum hose and electrical connector to switch if equipped with cruise.

4. Connect stop light switch connector.

5. Install accelerator cable into accelerator pedal assembly.

6. Install lower instrument panel trim and courtesy light.

7. Check for complete throttle opening and closing by operating accelerator pedal. Also check for poor carpet fit under the accelerator pedal. Throttle should operate freely without binding between fully closed and wide open throttle.

8. Check stop light switch and cruise control switch, if equipped, for proper adjustment.
