Differential Side Bearing Preload Adjustment
Differential Side Bearing Preload Adjustment^ Tools Required
- J B001 Dial Indicator
- J 42143 Side Bearing Preload Clamp
- J 42149 Side Bearing Preload Clamping Plate
- J 42178 Differential Carrier Gear Alignment Arbors
1. Use the cover bolts to install the J42149 onto the rear axle housing cover surface. Lightly seat the bolts.
2. Install the J 42149 between the side bearing race and the J 42143.
3. Install the J 8001 onto the J 42143 with the indicator button resting on the ring gear surface.
4. Install the differential carrier with the bearing races into the rear axle housing.
5. Install the left adjuster ring.
Important: The differential side bearing preload is achieved through adjusting rings of varying thickness installed on the right side bearing.
6. Install right adjuster rings of various thickness until there is zero movement of the differential carrier detected on the J 8001.
7. Add an additional 0.125 mm (0.005 inch) to each side in the adjuster ring thickness once the zero carrier movement is achieved. Note the total preload on bearings is 0.25 mm (0.010 inch). The side bearing preload is now correctly established.
Important: If it is necessary to vary the adjuster ring thickness, the same total thickness between the left and right adjuster rings must be maintained. Therefore, the identical shim thickness must be added to the opposite side from which it is removed.
8. Install the J42178 to the differential.
9. Inspect the rotating torque of the carrier with lubricated bearings:
^ 0.6 - 0.7 Nm (5 - 6 inch lbs.).
10. Remove the J42178 from the differential.
