Transmission Replacement
Removal Procedure- Tools Required
+ J 28467-B Universal Engine Support Fixture
1. Remove the headlamp housing upper filler panel.
2. Remove the cross vehicle brace.
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.
4. Remove the shift control cable from the shift lever.
5. Remove the shift control cable from the bracket and reposition the cable.
6. Disconnect the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine.
7. Remove the oil cooler lines at the cooler and the oil sending line at the transmission.
8. Remove the heater bypass pipe.
9. Remove the power steering return hose at the auxiliary cooler.
10. Install plugs in the cooler and the return hose to prevent fluid leakage or contamination.
11. Remove both heater tube retainers from the upper case side cover studs.
12. Disconnect the electrical connector from the coolant temperature sensor (1).
13. Remove the ground wire (2) from the stud near the rear transmission to engine brace.
14. Remove the upper nuts (1) from the rear engine to transmission brace (2).
15. Disconnect the transmission vent hose at transmission.
16. Carefully pull the wiring harness up from beneath the vehicle and set aside.
17. Reposition the engine harness at the top of the transmission to access the upper transmission bolts.
18. Remove the upper transmission bolts.
Important: Load the support fixture by tightening the wing nuts several turns in order to take the weight of the powertrain off of the mounts and the frame.
19. Install the J 28467-B.
20. Raise the left side of the powertrain (the transmission side) 25.4 mm (1 inch) above the powertrain resting position with the adjusting screws.
21. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
22. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
23. Remove both drive axles. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement.
24. Remove both front wheel opening splash shields.
25. Remove the engine splash shield.
26. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor connector.
27. Disconnect both front suspension sensor rods from lower control arm and position aside.
28. Remove the ABS modulator from the bracket and the support.
29. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement.
30. Remove the engine the transmission brace. Refer to Engine to Transaxle Brace Replacement.
31. Remove the front engine to transmission pencil brace.
32. Remove the three ground connections at the front of the transmission.
33. Disconnect the transmission main harness.
Important: Mark the flywheel to converter position so that they can be assembled in the same position.
34. Remove the flywheel to converter bolts.
35. Remove the powertrain mount nuts from the frame.
36. Remove the clamp bolt (Rotate the steering intermediate shaft so that the steering gear stub shaft clamp bolt is accessible from the left wheel opening).
Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear or to the intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control, which could result in an accident and possible personal injury.
Notice: Do not rotate the steering wheel or move the position of the steering gear once the intermediate shaft is disconnected. This will uncenter the Inflatable Restraint coil in the steering column. If the Inflatable Restraint coil becomes uncentered, it may be damaged during vehicle operation.
37. Disconnect the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Gear Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
38. Remove the electrical harness and connector from the front of the frame.
39. Support the rear of frame with an adjustable jack stand.
40. Remove the four rear frame bolts.
41. Lower the jack stand a few inches to gain access to the power steering gear heat shield and the return line fitting.
42. Remove the power steering gear heat shield and the power steering return line at the gear. Install plugs in the steering gear and pressure line in order to prevent fluid leakage or contamination. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement (Pressure) in Steering and Suspension.
43. Remove the power steering electrical connector.
44. Raise the jack stand and reinstall one rear frame bolt on each side finger tight in order to support the frame.
45. Remove the jack stand.
46. Remove the support frame.
47. Remove the six frame mount bolts.
48. Remove the lower frame and/or raise the vehicle with the steering gear attached.
49. Remove the left transmission mount and bracket from the transmission.
50. Remove the engine to transmission bolts.
51. Separate the engine and transmission.
52. Lower the transmission down and to the left on a slight angle so the transmission case can clear the end of the starter.
53. Lower the transmission.
Installation Procedure
- Tools Required
+ J 35551
1. Perform the oil cooler flushing procedure.
2. Install the oil cooler return line to transmission.
3. Transfer mounts to transmission.
4. Raise the transmission on the J 8763-02
5. Install the transaxle into the vehicle and align the engine alignment dowels (1 and 6).
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
6. Install the front lower and rear upper transaxle case to engine bolts.
- Tighten the bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the engine to transmission brace. Refer to Engine to Transaxle Brace Replacement.
8. Install the left transmission bracket and mount to the transmission.
- Tighten the bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
9. Install the front engine to transmission pencil brace.
10. Install the three ground connections at the front of the transmission.
11. Connect the transmission main harness.
12. Connect the upper nuts (1) from the rear engine to transmission brace (2).
13. Connect both heater tube retainers from the upper case side cover studs.
14. Connect the electrical connector from the coolant temperature sensor (1).
15. Connect the ground wire (2) from the stud near the rear transmission to engine brace.
16. Install the vehicle speed sensor connector.
17. Raise the frame and/or lower the vehicle while locating the engine and transmission mount studs into the frame, harnesses at the frame, and the frame mount bolt holes to the underbody.
18. Install two front and two rear frame bolts finger tight in order to support the frame.
19. Remove the frame support fixture.
20. Support the rear of the frame with an adjustable jack stand.
21. Remove two rear frame bolts.
22. Lower the jack stand a few inches in order to gain access to the power steering gear.
23. Install the power steering pressure hose at the steering gear. Power Steering Hoses Replacement (Pressure) in Steering and Suspension.
- Tighten the fitting to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
24. Install the power steering gear and power steering gear heat shield:
25. Raise the jack stand.
26. Install the six frame mount bolts in the following order:
26.1. Left side #2 mount bolt into the body.
26.2. Left side #1 mount bolt into the body.
26.3. The remaining frame mount bolts.
27. Install the electrical harness to the front of the frame.
Notice: Do not rotate the steering wheel or move the position of the steering gear once the intermediate shaft is disconnected. This will uncenter the Inflatable Restraint coil in the steering column. If the Inflatable Restraint coil becomes uncentered, it may be damaged during vehicle operation.
28. Install the steering intermediate shaft to the steering gear and install the clamp bolt.
- Tighten the bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
29. Install the left and right transmission mount nuts and the right engine mount nuts at the frame.
- Tighten the nuts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
Important: Line up the flywheel and converter using the marks made at disassembly.
30. Install the flywheel to converter bolts.
- Tighten the bolts to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
31. Install torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement.
32. Install the ABS modulator to the bracket.
33. Install both drive axles into the transmission. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement .
34. Connect both front suspension sensor rods to lower control arm.
35. Install both front wheel opening splash shields.
36. Install the engine splash shield.
37. Lower the vehicle.
38. Remove the J 28467-B Universal Engine Support Fixture.
39. Install the manual shaft linkage and nut.
- Tighten the manual shaft nut to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
40. Install heater bypass pipe.
41. Install the power steering hose at the auxiliary cooler.
42. Install the upper transaxle case to engine bolts.
- Tighten the upper transaxle bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.). Install the transmission cooler pipe fittings at the transmission.
43. Install the fittings finger tight.
- Tighten the cooler pipe fittings at transmission to 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.).
44. Install the oil sending pipe to the transmission.
45. Connect the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine.
46. Install the range control cable and bracket at the transmission.
- Tighten the bracket bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
47. Connect the shift control cable to the bracket.
48. Connect the shift cable to shift lever.
49. Adjust the shift control cable. Refer to Shift Cable Replacement.
50. Remove the engine support fixture.
51. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Powertrain Management.
52. Install the headlamp housing upper filler panel.
53. Install the cross vehicle brace.
54. Check the coolant level. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling Systems.
55. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Bleeding the Power Steering System in Steering and Suspension.
56. Add DEXRON-III transmission fluid as required. Refer to Fluid Filter Replacement and to Fluid Capacity Specifications.
57. Check the front suspension alignment, adjust the toe as necessary. Refer to Measuring Wheel Alignment in Steering and Suspension.
58. Reset the transmission adapts. Refer to Electronic Component Description.
59. Reset the transmission oil life indicator.
