Extension Housing: Service and Repair
Removal Procedure1. Remove the drive axle. Refer to Drive Axle in Driveline/Axle.
Important: Be careful not to damage the transmission case cover/case extension when removing the seal with a screwdriver.
2. Remove the drive axle seal. First use a screwdriver to pry outer the seal from the transmission. Use pliers in order to remove the remaining housing of drive axle seal from the transmission.
3. Inspect the drive axle seal mating surface on the drive axle housing for corrosion, grooves or nicks.
4. Clean the drive axle seal mating surface on the drive axle housing with crocus cloth.
Installation Procedure
Tools Required
- J 39051-1 Axle Seal Installer - RH
- J 39051-2 Axle Seal Installer - LH
Important: Be careful not to damage the transmission case cover/case extension when installing the drive axle seal.
1. Install the drive axle seal as follows:
- Install the right-hand drive axle seal using the J 39051-1 and a hammer.
- Install the left-hand drive axle seal using the J 39051-2 and a hammer.
2. Install the drive axle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shafts Replacement (new) Drive Axle in Driveline/Axle.
