Harmonic Balancer - Crankshaft Pulley: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

^ Tools Required
- J39411 Flywheel Holder
- J38416 Crankshaft Balancer Remover
- J39344 Crankshaft Balancer Installer

1. Release the tension from the drive belt.
2. Remove the drive belt.
3. Raise the vehicle on the hoist. Refer to Vehicle Lift Points.
4. Remove the right front wheel.
5. Remove the two splash shields from the wheelhouse.





6. Remove the brace between the engine oil pan and the transmission case.





7. Install flywheel holder J39411.
8. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt.
9. Support the engine frame with a tall screw jack.
10. Remove three engine frame bolts at the right of the cradle.





11. Disconnect the RSS sensor from the right side lower control arm.
12. Lower the engine frame to obtain clearance for the J38416 below the body rail.





13. Install pilot J39344 into end of crankshaft.
14. Remove the crankshaft balancer using the J38416.

Installation Procedure





1. Position the crankshaft balancer to the crankshaft.
2. Install the crankshaft balancer using the J39344.
3. Thoroughly clean the crankshaft balancer bolt threads.





4. Apply engine oil to the threads.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

5. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt.
^ Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
6. The balancer bolt must be tightened an additional 120 degrees. Make a mark on the balancer bolt flange in line with the center line of one of the balancer legs.
7. Raise the engine frame into position.
8. Install three frame bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.).





9. Reconnect the suspension position sensors to the lower control arms.
10. Remove the J39411.





11. Install the oil pan to transmission brace.
^ Tighten the four bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
12. Install the wheel house splash shields.
13. Install the right front wheel.
14. Lower the vehicle.
15. Install the accessory drive belt.
