Starter Motor: Service and Repair
REMOVAL PROCEDURE1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
2. Remove the intake manifold.
3. Disconnect the wire from the "S" terminal on the starter.
4. Disconnect the battery cable from the starter.
5. Remove the starter mounting bolts.
6. Remove the starter.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
NOTE: Before installing the starter motor to the engine, tighten the inner nuts on the solenoid terminals to be sure that they are secure in the cap. Tighten the inner nuts on the battery terminal and the starter motor terminal to 8 N.m (70 lb in). If the nuts are not properly tightened, the starter may fail later due to terminal or cap damage.
1. Connect the solenoid switch lead.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 3 N.m (26 lb in).
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in General Information.
2. Install the battery cable nut.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 8 N.m (70 lb in).
3. Install the starter motor.
4. Install the starter motor mounting bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).
5. Install the intake manifold.
6. Connect the positive battery cable.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).
7. Connect the negative battery cable.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).
