Engine Removal and Installation

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

^ Tools Required
- J37088-A/BT-9171 Fuel Line Quick Connect Separator
- J 39530 Universal Engine Support Table





1. Disable the SIR.
2. Recover the A/C Refrigerant System.
3. Remove the air intake duct.
4. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
5. Drain the cooling system.





6. Remove the engine cover.





7. Remove the radiator hose at the crossover.
8. Remove the upper radiator hose from the engine.





9. Remove the radiator upper cover.
10. Remove the cooling fans.





11. Remove the transmission cooler lines from the radiator.





12. Disconnect the coolant overflow hose.
13. Remove the radiator and A/C condenser assembly.
14. Remove the cruise control servo connections.
15. Remove the throttle and cruise control cables from the throttle body.
16. Remove the brake pressure switch and bracket.
17. Disconnect the brake master cylinder.





18. Remove the shift cable from the manual shift lever and the bracket.





19. Remove the vacuum hose from the brake booster.
20. Using the J37088-A/E7T-9171 fuel line quick connect separator disconnect the fuel inlet and return the lines.
21. Remove the negative battery cable from the left cylinder head.





22. Disconnect the A/C suction hose from the compressor.





23. Disconnect the A/C discharge hose from the compressor.
24. Disconnect the electrical harness from the underhood relay center.
25. Disconnect the electrical pass through by the brake booster.
26. Disconnect the right and left road sensing suspension electrical connectors.
27. Raise and support the vehicle.





28. Remove the lower engine splash shield.
29. Remove the right and left wheels.





30. Disconnect the steering gear intermediate shaft.





31. Disconnect the wheel speed and brake wear sensors.





32. Disconnect the exhaust downpipe from the exhaust manifold.
33. Disconnect the brake line at the proportioning valves.
34. Disconnect the oxygen sensors electrical connectors.
35. Lower the vehicle.
36. Remove the right and left road sensing suspension wheel speed harness brackets.





37. Remove the front and rear engine mount nuts.





38. Remove the strut to tower bolts at each strut tower.





39. Position J 39580 powertrain support dolly under engine assembly.





40. If the powertrain support dolly is unavailable. Support the powertrain with four suitable jackstands.





41. Remove the six frame mount bolts (3).
42. Raise the vehicle slowly.





43. Remove the flywheel inspection cover.





44. Disconnect the torque converter from the flywheel
45. Attach an engine lift to the engine.
46. Disconnect the left engine mount from the frame.
47. Remove the engine to transaxle bracket.





48. Remove the power steering gear heat shield.
49. Remove the power steering gear and set aside.
50. Disconnect the right engine mount to frame.
51. Remove the transaxle to engine bolts.
52. Raise engine from the frame and transaxle assembly.
53. Transfer necessary parts as required.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the engine to transmission and frame assembly.
2. Install four transmission (bell housing) to engine bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).

3. Install the right engine mount bracket to the engine.
4. Install the power steering gear to the frame.





5. Install the power steering gear heat shield.
6. Install the engine to transmission bracket and bolts.
7. Connect the left engine mount to frame nut.
8. Remove the engine lift from the engine.





9. Install the torque converter to the flywheel.
^ Tighten the bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).





10. Install the flywheel inspection cover.
11. Position the powertrain under the vehicle.
12. Carefully lower the vehicle and align the powertrain.
13. Install six body frame bolts.





14. Install the strut tower bolts.
^ Tighten the strut tower bolts to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).

15. Install the front and rear engine mount nuts.
16. Connect the right and left road sensing suspension brackets.
17. Raise and support the vehicle.
18. Connect two oxygen sensor connections.
19. Connect the brake line at the proportioning valves.





20. Install the exhaust downpipe to exhaust manifolds.
^ Tighten nuts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).






21. Connect wheel speed sensor and brake sensor electrical connections.





22. Install power steering gear to intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
^ Tighten the bolt to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).






23. Install front engine splash shield with six push-in fasteners.
24. Install right and left wheels.
^ Tighten wheel nuts to 140 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).

25. Lower the vehicle.
26. Install the right and left road sensing suspension electrical connection.
27. Connect the electrical pass through by the brake booster.





28. Install the upper radiator hose to the engine.
29. Install the radiator hose to the crossover.
30. Connect the electrical harness to the relay center.





31. Connect the A/C discharge line to the compressor.
^ Tighten the line to 22 Nm (16 in. lbs.).






32. Connect the A/C suction line to the compressor.
^ Tighten the line to 22 Nm (16 in. lbs.).

33. Connect the negative battery cable to the generator.
34. Connect the fuel lines.





35. Connect the brake booster vacuum hose.





36. Connect the shift cable at the transaxle.
37. Connect the brake master cylinder.
38. Install the brake pressure switch and bracket.
39. Connect the throttle and cruise cables.
40. Connect the coolant overflow hoses.
41. Install the radiator and condenser assembly.
42. Connect the forward discriminating sensor.
43. Install the upper radiator support cover.





44. Install the engine cover and four nuts (1).
45. Install the air cleaner cover and PCM connector.
46. Install the air intake duct.
47. Recharge the A/C system.
48. Fill the coolant system.
49. Enable the SIR.
50. Bleed the power steering system.
51. Bleed the brakes.
