Cruise Control System Operation

TO SET CRUISE CONTROL

CAUTION: Do not use the cruise control on slippery roads, winding roads or in traffic of heavy or varying volume. When you are traveling down a steeply graded hill, the cruise control should be disengaged by depressing the brake pedal lightly. The automatic transmission can then be shifted into a lower gear range to help control the vehicle speed. Failure to follow these CAUTIONS could possibly cause you to lose control of the vehicle and result in damage to the vehicle and personal injury.

1. Move the cruise control switch to ON.
2. Get up to the speed you want.
3. Push in the SET button at the end of the lever and release it.
4. Take your foot off the accelerator pedal.

TO RESUME A SET SPEED
Suppose you set your cruise control at a desired speed with the SET button and then you apply the brake. This, of course, shuts off the cruise control. But you do not need to reset it. Once you're going 25 mph (40km/h) or more, you can move the cruise control switch from ON to R/A (which stands for Resume/Accelerate) for about half a second. You will go right back up to your chosen speed and stay there. If you turn the ignition off, or turn cruise switch off, you will erase memory.

TO GET OUT OF CRUISE CONTROL
There are two ways to turn off the cruise control.
1. Step lightly on the brake pedal.
2. Move the cruise switch to OFF.

CRUISE RELEASE SWITCH (ABS/TCC SWITCH)
For adjustment of the the cruise release switch (ABS/TCC switch), refer to Cruise Release Switch Adjustment. Brake Switch (Cruise Control)

PASSING ANOTHER VEHICLE WHILE USING CRUISE CONTROL
Use the accelerator pedal to increase your speed. When you take your foot off the pedal, your vehicle will slow down to the cruise control speed you set earlier.

TO INCREASE SPEED WHILE USING CRUISE CONTROL
There are two ways to gain higher speed while using cruise control.
1. Use the accelerator pedal to get to the higher speed, push the button at the end of the lever, then release the button and the accelerator pedal. You will now cruise at the higher speed.
2. Move the cruise switch from ON to R/A, hold it there until you get up to the speed you want and release the switch. To increase your speed in very small amounts, move the switch to R/A for less than half a second and release it. Each time you do this, your vehicle will go 1.6 km/h (1 mph) faster.

The accelerate feature will only work after you turn on the cruise control by pushing the SET button.

USING CRUISE CONTROL ON HILLS
How well your cruise control will work on hills depends upon your speed, load, and the incline of the hills. When going up steep hills, you may have to step on the accelerator pedal to maintain your speed. When going downhill, you may have to brake or shift to a lower gear to keep your speed down. Of course, applying the brake takes you out of cruise control. Many drivers find this to be too much trouble and do not use cruise control on steep hills.

TO ERASE CRUISE SPEED MEMORY
When you turn off the cruise control or the ignition is turned off, your cruise control set speed memory is erased.

ENGAGEMENT SWITCH
The engagement switch cannot be serviced. The complete multifunction turn signal lever must be replaced as an assembly. Refer to Multifunction Turn Signal Lever Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column Tilt.

To Reduce Speed While Using Cruise Control There are two ways to reduce your speed while using cruise control.
1. Push in the button at the end of the lever until you reach the lower speed you want. Then release it.
2. To slow down in very small amounts, push the button for less than half a second. Each time you do this, you will go 1.6 km/h (1 mph) slower.
