Oil Cooler: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE





1. Remove the coolant bridge.
2. Loosen the left side exhaust manifold upper heat shield bolts.
3. Remove the oil feed line from the engine oil cooler.
4. Remove the return line from the engine oil cooler.





5. Take note of the four seals.
6. Raise and support the vehicle.
7. Remove the left side catalytic converter with exhaust pipe.
8. Remove the oil filter.
9. Remove the crank sensor bolt.
10. Remove the crank sensor.
11. Remove the engine oil cooler line clamp.





12. Remove the oil feed line from the engine block.
13. Remove the return line from the engine block.
14. Remove the oil feed line.
15. Remove the return line.
16. Lower the vehicle.





17. Remove the engine oil cooler inlet and outlet nuts (1).
18. Remove the engine oil cooler cover bolts (2).
19. Remove the engine oil cooler cover.
20. Remove the engine oil cooler.
21. Clean all the sealing surfaces.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the engine oil cooler.





2. Apply a 2 mm (0.08 in) bead of silicone sealer, GM P/N 12345997, in the groove around the engine oil cooler cover in place of the old seal.
3. Install the engine oil cooler cover.





4. Install the engine oil cooler cover bolts (2).
- Tighten the engine oil cooler cover bolts to 30 Nm (22 ft lbs).

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

5. Install the engine oil cooler inlet and outlet nuts (1).
- Tighten the engine oil cooler inlet and outlet nuts to 20 Nm (15 ft lbs).





6. Raise and support the vehicle.
7. Install the oil feed line.
8. Install the return line.
9. Install the oil feed line to the engine block.
- Tighten the oil feed line to 30 Nm (22 ft lbs).

10. Install the return line to the engine block.
- Tighten the return line to 30 Nm (22 ft lbs).

11. Install the engine oil cooler line clamp.
12. Install the crank sensor.
13. Install the crank sensor bolt.
- Tighten the crank sensor bolt to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs).

14. Install the oil filter.
- Tighten the oil filter to 15 Nm (11 ft lbs).

15. Install the left side catalytic converter with exhaust pipe.
16. Lower the vehicle.





17. Install the oil feed and install the return lines to the engine oil cooler. Use four new seals.
- Tighten the oil feed and tighten the return lines to 30 Nm (22 ft lbs).

18. Coat the exhaust manifold upper heat shield bolts with high temperature anti-seize compound, GM P/N 5613695 or equivalent.
19. Install the left side exhaust manifold upper heat shield bolts.
- Tighten the left side exhaust manifold upper heat shield bolts to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs).

20. Install the coolant bridge.
21. Check and fill the engine oil as necessary.
