Methods For Locating Leaks

NOTE: The cause of most external leaks generally can be located and repaired with the transmission in the vehicle.

1. Verify leaking fluid is transmission fluid.
2. Clean the suspected leak area.
3. Operate the vehicle for at least 24 km (15 mi) or until normal operating temperatures are reached.
4. Park the vehicle over clean paper or cardboard.
5. Turn OFF the engine.
6. Inspect for fluid spots on paper.
7. Trace the source of the leak from the spot on the paper.
8. Make necessary repairs.

POWDER METHOD

1. Clean the suspected area with a suitable solvent.

Important: Do not spray hot engine parts with aerosol during the following step. The aerosol may ignite.

2. Apply the aerosol type powder (foot powder) to the suspected leak area.
3. Operate the vehicle for at least 24 km (15 mi) or until normal operating temperatures are reached.
4. Turn OFF the engine.
5. Inspect the suspected leak area.
6. Trace the leak path through the powder to the source of the leak.
7. Make necessary repairs.

DYE AND BLACK LIGHT METHOD
A fluid dye and a black light kit is available from various tool manufacturers.
1. Follow manufacturer recommendations for amount of dye to use.
2. Operate the vehicle for at least 24 km (15 mi) or until normal operating temperatures are reached after dye has been added.
3. Detect the source of the leak with the black light.
4. Make necessary repairs.
