Abnormal Operating Characteristics: Overview





The most common symptom of abnormal operation is the key cannot be removed from the ignition (i.e.. key is stuck in ignition). This indicates a malfunction of the Park/Lock system. The Park/Lock system features a lifting magnet (solenoid) attached to the ignition switch which prevents removal of the ignition key if the shift lever is not in the "PARK" position. The lifting magnet is controlled by a switch, the "Unlock Switch", located on the left side of the shifter assembly under the console. This switch is operated by a metal "foot" on the end of the shift lever release rod (refer to Figure 1). The most common causes of the key being stuck in the ignition are listed below:
