Emissions - Conditions Causing EVAP DTC P0455 to Set

File In Section: 6E - Engine Fuel & Emission

Bulletin No.: 61-63-13

INFORMATION

Subject:
DTC PO455 Caused by Loose Fuel Cap

Model:
1997 Cadillac Catera

The Catera features an enhanced evaporative control system that minimizes the escape of fuel vapors to the atmosphere. This system will set Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) and turn on the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) if there is a leak in the evaporative emission system. The gas cap, if not put on tightly, can be a source of leakage and cause a DTC P0455 to set. The Catera's gas cap must be tightened until the black button on the center of the cap completely covers the red indicator that surrounds the button. This can be accomplished with 3-4 clicks of the cap when tightening. These instructions should be reviewed with customers during Gold Key Delivery.

The conditions to set DTC PO455 require that the car runs for at least 16.5 minutes. After 16.5 minutes a diagnostic test is run. If the diagnostic test fails on two consecutive drive trips, DTC PO455 will set and the MIL will illuminate. The code will self clear and the MIL will turn off after three consecutive drive trips that the diagnostic test runs and does not fail. The MIL can also be turned off and the DTC cleared using a Tech 2. Additional Information on this DTC is available in the Service Information Manual, Section 6E-A, Engine System Diagnosis.
