Condition
Some owners may comment that the coolant temperature gauge appears to indicate the vehicle is running hot. During normal engine operating conditions, the temperature gauge needle may be between the fifth and sixth increments.
Cause
This condition is caused by a software miscalibration.
Correction
Reprogram Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) with updated software released on Service Technology Group (STG) Techline CD # 15.
1. Verify that the vehicle is operating within normal temperature range (refer to Section 6B of the appropriate Service Manual).
2. Using a scan tool or on-board diagnostics, read the IPC CPM value (IP D99). If this value is 7141 or 7142, the updated software release has been installed.
Important:
If IPC value is 7141 or 7142, do not attempt to reprogram the IPC.
If the value is 2040, go to Step 3.
3. Using a T5 or T6 with scan tool, or a T50 or T60, reprogram the PC using the appropriate update. (If you are using a T50 or T60, start at Step 7.)
4. Connect scan tool, turn ignition switch "ON".
5. Select "PROGRAMMING" (F3), enter model year.
6. Select "REQUEST INFO" (F0), verify VIN.
7. Disconnect scan tool, turn ignition switch "OFF".
8. Go to "DIAGNOSTIC MENU" (ENTER).
9. Select "SPS/EEPROM" (ENTER).
10. Select programming method.
11. Select menu labeled "SPECIAL" (ENTER).
12. Select "PROGRAM BY VIC" (ENTER).
13. Enter "1005" and select "DONE".
14. If using scan tool, connect it to the terminal.
15. Select "INSTRUMENT PANEL CALIBRATION" then "PROGRAM" (T50 or T60 go to Step 18).
16. Connect scan tool, turn ignition switch "ON".
17. Select "PROGRAMMING".
18. Select "PROGRAM IPC".
19. Verify repair.
