PRNDL, Clock, Fuel Data Displays - Erratic/Inaccurate

File In Section: 8 - Chassis/Body Electrical

Bulletin No.: 63-83-06

Date: May, 1996

Subject:
Erratic/Inaccurate Displays for PRNDL, Clock and Fuel Data and/or Erroneous Fast Audible Warning Chimes (Replace Radio)

Models:
1996 Cadillac DeVille, Eldorado, Seville
with Base Radio, RPO U1L/UW6

Condition

Some of the above listed vehicles equipped with a base radio (RPO U1L/UW6) may intermittently exhibit a boxed PRNDL display (digital PC), an erratic clock display, and/or an inaccurate reading for average fuel economy and fuel used. The PC may display an average fuel economy as low as 2 mpg and fuel used as high as 99.9 gallons. Vehicle symptoms may also include an unusually fast audible warning chime that cannot be explained by an existing condition (i.e.; headlamps on or key in ignition).

Cause

This condition may be caused by a malfunctioning base radio interrupting the Class II communication lines.

Correction

To correct this condition, exchange the radio. The defective radios have a build date code of 100 (see Figure 1). Verify that IPC fuel data displays operate correctly after exchange.
