Sunroof / Moonroof: Description and Operation

The astro roof system consists of the sunroof assembly and three electrical components: the astro roof actuator assembly, the astro roof switch, and the astro roof control module.

The sunroof assembly has three end point positions:
^ Fully closed (flush with the vehicle roof).
^ Fully open (retracted into the roof cavity).
^ Fully vented (rear of the glass raised to the limit of its travel).

The astro roof actuator assembly consists of a reversible DC motor, gear train, and a limit switch.

The astro roof switch is a rocker-type switch with three positions, normal center off position, CLOSE/OPEN VENT position, and OPEN/CLOSE VENT.

The astro roof control module controls the astro roof motor based on inputs from the astro roof switch and limit switch. Special features of the control module are Express Open and Express Close Vent, Stall Sense, and Operation Time-Out.

The Express feature makes it necessary to only momentarily push the astro roof switch in the OPEN/CLOSE VENT position in order to fully open the glass or to close the glass from the vent position.

Stall Sense stops the astro roof when the sunroof assembly is obstructed or has reached the fully open position during Express open.

Operation Time-Out protects the astro roof against failure of the stall sense. The control module stops the operation of the sunroof assembly after a 20 second time out.

Power and Ground
Battery voltage is applied from the WINDOWS circuit breaker through CKT 42 (RED) to the accessory time delay relay. When the ignition is turned ON or retained accessory power (RAP) is active the accessory time delay relay applies voltage to the astro roof module through CKT 70 (PNK). The astro roof control module is grounded through terminal D, CKT 1250 (BLK).

Limit Switch
The limit switch lets the astro roof control module know when the glass is in the flush closed position.

When the astro roof is in the flush closed position, the limit switch is closed. This grounds terminal 8 CKT 132 (RED) of the astro roof module. When the astro roof is either in the open or vent position, the limit switch opens removing ground from terminal 8.

The limit switch receives ground from the astro roof control module through CKT 133 (YEL).

Express Feature
The astro roof control module enters express open or express close vent mode when terminal 6 is momentarily grounded through CKT 100 (B RN) by the astro roof switch. The control module then applies voltage through CKT 129 (LT GRN) and ground through CKT 127 (DK GRN) to the astro roof actuator assembly. The astro roof control module drives the astro roof actuator until:
^ Motor stall is sensed.
^ The astro roof switch is moved to the OPEN/CLOSE VENT position.
^ The astro roof switch is moved to the CLOSE/OPEN VENT position.
^ The control module times out (20 seconds after the start of the express mode).
^ The limit switch is closed.

Closing, Venting
When the astro roof switch is held in the CLOSE/OPEN VENT position, terminal 7 of the astro proof control module is grounded through CKT 110 (ORN) by the astro roof switch. The control module then applies voltage through CKT 127 (DK GRN) and ground through CKT 129 (LT URN) to the astro roof actuator assembly. The astro roof control module drives the astro roof actuator until:
^ Motor stall is sensed.
^ The astro roof switch is returned to the neutral position.
^ The limit switch is closed.
^ The control module times out (20 seconds after the start of the CLOSE/OPEN VENT command.
