Inoperative Systems/Intermittent Blown Fuses (Repair Harness at Starter Motor Shield)
Models:
1994 Cadillac DeVille - Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint RU242O67
with 4.9L Engine (VIN B - RPO L26)
CONDITION
A condition of an inoperative system may occur due to intermittent blown fuses (maxi-fuse 1, mini-fuse B7 or mini-fuse A3 may be experienced).
CAUSE
Conduit may be cut and wires exposed from rubbing against starter shield for an extended period of time causing an open circuit or short to ground, resulting in a blown fuse,
Important:
Though this is a potential cause for circuit failure, it is not the only one that could occur. Upon completion of the following correction procedure, verify that no other faults appear in the circuit.
CORRECTION
1. Disconnect battery. Refer to Section 6D1 of the Service Manual.
2. Raise vehicle and remove nut retaining shield to starter motor.
3. Lower vehicle and remove nut retaining shield to engine block.
4. Remove starter motor shield.
5. Repair any broken wires using repair procedures in Section 8A of the Service Manual.
6. Using a 6.35 mm (1/4") drill bit, drill a hole in the shield 8 mm from edge and central in oval portion of shield. See Figure 1.
7. Install shield.
8. Install nut to retain shield to the engine block.
Tighten
Tighten nut to 11 Nm (97 lb.in.).
9. Install nut to retain shield to starter.
Tighten
Tighten nut to 3 Nm (27 lb.in.).
10. Install wiring harness retainer, P/N 3816659, to repaired harness.
11. With retainer installed on harness, apply high temperature, 130° C (266° F), electrical tape over conduit as necessary to repair any damage to conduit.
12. Snap harness retainer into 6.35mm (1/4") hole in shield.
13. Push shield back toward starter to locate conduit as far away as possible from exhaust (driver's side of shield).
14. Verify that the affected circuit has no other faults using the specific diagnostic procedure for that circuit located in Section 8A of the Service Manual.
