Case Side Cover and Gaskets
TRANSAXLE CASE SIDE COVER AND/OR GASKETS 4T60 (440-T4)

TOOLS REQUIRED:
^ J-28467 Engine Support Fixture
^ J-34754 Drive Axle Boot Seal Protectors
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Air cleaner assembly.
3. Inner engine cooling fan assembly.
4. Vacuum hoses to cruise control servo and vacuum modulator.
5. Wire connectors to cruise control servo, distributor, engine oil sender, transaxle connector.
6. TV cable from both ends.
7. Vacuum modulator.
8. Install engine support fixture J 28467 and note position of left side hooks.
9. Raise vehicle, assure suitable support.
10. Left front tire and wheel assembly.
11. Right and left wheel housing lower splash shields.
12. Left stabilizer to control arm link, ball joint nut and cotter pin, separate left ball joint from steering knuckle.
13. Four transaxle mount to cradle and bracket nuts.
14. A/C compressor splash shield and # 1 cradle mount insulator cover left side, engine mount and dampener to cradle attachments.
15. Six right front cradle to cradle attaching bolts.
16. Two left stabilizer mount attaching bolts.
17. Two left rear cradle to cradle attaching bolts.
18. Wire loom and vacuum hoses from clips on cradle and wire loom clip from transaxle mount.
19. A.I.R. pipe to hose end connections, pipe retainer at rear of cradle (not necessary to remove pipe from left cradle member).
20. Lower vehicle.
21. Raise engine/transaxle two inches using 2 support fixture hooks at flywheel side of engine.
22. Raise vehicle.
23. # 1 insulator bolt and left cradle assembly (separate right front corner first).
24. Disconnect A.I.R. management valve from transaxle mount bracket and reposition.
25. Stud bolts through transaxle mount bracket to bell housing.
26. Lower car, lower transaxle to originally noted position.
27. Transaxle mount bracket upper stud bolts and bracket assembly using clockwise motion.
28. Lower transaxle left side to limit allowed by support fixture hooks (until hook upper end is flush with the top of the T-nut).
29. Raise vehicle.
30. Install drive axle boot seal protector J-34754.
31. Drive axle from transaxle, reposition to side (rear) and support properly.
NOTICE: Care must be taken to prevent tri-pot joints from being over extended when either end of the drive axle is disconnected. Over extension of the joint may result in separation of internal components and possible joint failure.
32. Transaxle case side cover pan bolts (140) and nuts (141).
33. Case side cover pan (139) and gaskets (144,145).
CLEAN
^ Case and side cover gasket surfaces.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. New gaskets on case, retain with petroleum jelly.
2. Side cover, bolts and nuts.
TIGHTEN
^ Bolts and nuts to 14 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).
3. To reassemble, reverse removal steps 1 to 31 listed above.
TIGHTEN
^ # 1 insulator bolt to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.).
^ Cradle to cradle mounting bolts, all positions to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.).
^ Upper transaxle mount bracket stud bolts to 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.).
^ Side (front) transaxle mount bracket stud bolts to 70 Nm (50 ft. lbs.).
^ Transaxle mount nuts to 45 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
^ Stabilizer mount bolts to 50 Nm (38 ft. lbs.).
^ Stabilizer link bolt to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
^ Ball joint nut to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.).
^ Wheel lug nuts to 140 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
4. Refill transaxle fluid to proper level.
