Power Steering Switch Circuit:

DESCRIPTION:

This diagnostic test monitors the power steering pressure switch. when a load is placed on the power steering such as full lock, the switch opens. Code E040 sets when vehicle speed is above 45 mph and the switch is open. The power steering switch is located under the engine on the rack-in pinion assembly under the ABS hydraulic unit.

TEST CONDITIONS:

1. Vehicle speed greater than 45 MPH.
2. Engine running.

FAILURE CONDITIONS:

Power steering switch opens with vehicle speed 45 mph or greater.

ACTION TAKEN:

1. PCM/ECM turns on "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" telltale.

NOTE ON INTERMITTENTS:

Manipulate affected wiring while the engine is running. If the fault is induced the code will set and the wiring should be repaired for an intermittent open or short to ground. Remove and replace both the power steering switch connector and the PCM/ECM connector and ensure that they are latched.
