E039 Part 1 of 2

Code E039:

VCC 3rd And 4th Switch Circuit:

DESCRIPTION:

The Viscous Convertor Clutch (VCC) solenoid controls hydraulic fluid for VCC apply and release. The solenoid is energized when the ECM provides a ground. The power for the VCC solenoid comes from the ignition switch. Code E039 is set when the engine speed exceeds the normal value for a given speed with VCC applied. The VCC is located in the transmission connector in the left front of the engine compartment on the transmission.

TEST CONDITIONS:

1. Codes E026, E027, E031, E032, and E034 not set.
2. Trans in fourth gear.
3. Throttle switch open.
4. Closed loop.
5. Trans not in park or neutral.
6. Brake off.
7. VCC engaged.

FAILURE CONDITIONS:

Engine speed too high for vehicle speed for 5 seconds.

ACTION TAKEN:

1. ECM turns on the "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" telltale.
2. VCC is disabled for the entire ignition cycle.

NOTES ON FAULT TREE:

1. Testing VCC brake switch. If test passes the display will alternate between HI 0 and LO X when the brake pedal is depressed. If test fails the display will not change.

2. Tests for a short to ground in circuit 422 or defective ECM, which would cause the VCC solenoid to always be engaged electrically. While this would not set a code E039, it would cause a driveability condition, as VCC would apply whenever hydraulic pressure is available (second gear or above). This allows this chart to be used as a complete electrical test, whether or not code E039 is present.

3. If circuit within the transmission is not open, this indicates the jumpers used in the test were not making good contact. Correct jumpers and retest from beginning of chart.
