Case Side Cover and Gaskets
CASE SIDE COVER AND GASKETS 4T60 (440-T4)Engine Support Fixture J-28467.:
TOOLS REQUIRED:
^ J 28467 Engine Support Fixture
^ J 34754 Drive Axle Boot Seal Protectors
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Air cleaner assembly.
3. Install engine support fixture J 28467.
4. Upper case side cover bolts and fuel pipe bracket.
5. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
6. Left front wheel and tire assembly.
7. Left ball joint from steering knuckle.
8. Stabilizer bolt and bushing from left control arm.
9. Left engine splash shield (to provide improved access).
10. Vacuum pump mounting bolts, support to prevent hose or wiring damage.
11. Install drive axle boot seal protectors J 34754.
12. Drive axle from transaxle. Set to side (rear) and support properly.
NOTICE: Care must be taken to prevent tri-pot joints from being over extended when either end of the drive axle is disconnected. Over extension of the joint may result in separation of internal components and possible joint failure.
13. Left front transaxle mount. Refer to "Transaxle Mount".
14. Right front engine mount. Refer to "Transaxle Mount".
15. Loosen right and left rear transaxle mounts to prevent damage.
16. Left cradle member.
17. Loosen right cradle mounts # 2 and # 3 on both left and right sides of vehicle, do not remove mount bolts completely.
18. Lower vehicle and lower transaxle/engine assembly by adjusting J 28467.
^ Note position of support rods prior to lowering.
^ In order to obtain maximum clearance for cover removal, the engine and transaxle assembly needs to be tilted downward at the front end. This is accomplished by positioning the left (driver's side) rear support rod of J 28467 until it extends approximately six inches above the T-nut and left front support rod is lowered until the top is flush with the top of the nut.
19. Raise vehicle.
20. Transaxle cooler lines from mounting bracket and reposition.
21. Remaining transaxle case side cover pan bolts.
22. Nuts surrounding cover axle opening.
23. Case side cover pan and gaskets.
CLEAN
^ Case and side cover gasket surfaces.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. New gaskets on case, retain with petroleum jelly.
2. Side cover, bolts and nuts along with fuel pipe bracket.
TIGHTEN
^ Bolts and nuts to 14 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).
3. Reposition cooler lines into mounting bracket.
4. Lower car and raise transaxle/Engine assembly to original position by adjusting J 28467.
5. Raise car.
6. Left cradle member and attaching bolts on right front and left rear corners of cradle assembly and # 1 cradle mounting bolt.
TIGHTEN
^ Left and right cradle bolts to 54 Nm (40 lbs. ft.).
^ Cradle mounting bolts bolts, all positions to 100 Nm (74 lbs. ft.).
7. Left front transaxle and right front engine mounts. Refer to "Transaxle Mount".
TIGHTEN
^ Mounting nuts to 31 Nm (23 lbs. ft.).
^ Left rear and right rear transaxle mounting nuts to 31 Nm (23 lbs. ft.).
8. Left drive axle into transaxle.
9. Stabilizer bolt, bushings and sleeve to left control arm.
TIGHTEN
^ Stabilizer bolt to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
10. Lower ball joint to left steering knuckle.
TIGHTEN
^ Ball joint nut to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.).
11. Vacuum pump assembly and left splash shield.
12. Left front tire and wheel lug nuts.
TIGHTEN
^ Lug nuts to 140 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
13. Lower vehicle and remove J 28467.
14. Air cleaner assembly and negative battery cable.
15. Refill transaxle fluid to proper level.
