Code E39 Continued:
NOTES ON FAULT TREE:
1. At this point the electrical integrity of the system has been verified. A road test is now required to test the operation of the VCC.
2. If no rpm change is noticed, the VCC is not applying. Perform cooler line pressure test.
3. If the engine speed does increase 100 rpm or greater, VCC is applying. However, since code E39 is stored the ECM has detected excessive VCC slippage at some time, and the road test must include "worst case" driving conditions. To induce an excessive VCC slippage driving condition, drive the vehicle under heavy load, such as up hills. If there are no hills in test drive area, apply the parking brake while driving.
CAUTION: DO NOT use the parking brake for extended periods of time as loss of rear brakes or damage could occur to the brake system.
4. Excessive slippage is indicated if the engine speed loaded is 100rpm or greater than engine speed unloaded at the same vehicle speed. Since the ECM monitors only RPM vs. MPH it does not know if the excessive slippage is due to the VCC or the transaxle components. A code E39 may be caused by slippage in the 2nd and or 4th clutches since they are the only clutches that transmit torque in 4th gear. If the 2nd clutch is slipping, a slip or flare should occur during 1-2 upshifts.
5. Normal VCC slippage is 0 to 75 rpm when the VCC is engaged and engine is loaded. Compare the engine rpm and mph readings obtained in the road test and those in the table.
6. To check for 4th gear slippage, note the engine speed increase when downshifted OD to 3 at 50 to 60 mph with VCC engaged.
7. If rpm increase is less than 650 rpm, there is slippage in the 4th clutch.
8. If engine speed increases 650 to 750 rpm when shifted form OD to 3, 4th clutch is not slipping and there is excessive slippage in the VCC.
NOTE ON INTERMITTENTS:
The vehicle must be driven above 40 MPH for 10 seconds for code E39 to occur. If the chart has been properly followed and no trouble is indicated, the cause in most likely an intermittent connection in circuits 420 or 422. If the customer complaint indicates that the code occurs after an extended drive, check for signs of transmission overheating.
