SUBJECT: "STARTING DISABLED DUE TO THEFT SYSTEM" MESSAGE DISPLAYED USING SOME IGNITION KEYS
MODELS AFFECTED: 1989 ELDORADOS, SEVILLES, AND ALLANTES
Some 1989 Eldorados, Sevilles, and Allantes may experience a condition of the "STARTING DISABLED DUE TO THEFT SYSTEM" message being displayed on the Driver Information Center when some ignition keys are used.
This condition may be due to a damaged or incorrect ignition key. Some vehicles may have been built with mismatched key sets. That is, all of the ignition keys do not carry the same electrical code, even though the mechanical cut is identical.
When diagnosing any conditions with the PASS KEY system, it is important to verify that the condition is present with all of the ignition keys. If the condition is present with all ignition keys, diagnosis should follow the procedures outlined in Section 8A-133 of the Service Information Manual. If the condition is present only with selected keys, those keys should be replaced.
