Cylinder Head Replacement - Left Side

(Figure 1) Cylinder Head Bolt Torque Sequence:






REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Drain engine coolant.
3. Rocker arm covers and the intake manifold.
4. L/H exhaust manifold.
5. Engine lift bracket and dipstick tube.
6. Reposition the AIR bracket.
7. Ten cylinder head bolts and then the cylinder head.
8. Clean the sealing surfaces of cylinder head, block, liners and clean the head bolts.

NOTE: Using compressed air, blow out head bolt holes to remove any accumulation of oil or coolant. Use care when cleaning upper row of holes so that foreign material does not remain inside engine.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. New head gasket over dowels on cylinder block (either side up).
2. Cylinder head
3. Apply camshaft and lifter prelube, GM P/N 1052356 or equivalent, to all head bolts.
4. Cylinder head bolts finger tight, then tighten bolts in sequence (figure 1) to:
a. 50 Nm (38 ft lbs).
b. Then to 90 Nm (68 ft lbs).
c. Then tighten cylinder head bolts 1, 3 and 4 to 120 Nm (90 ft lbs).

CAUTION: It is extremely important that the above procedure, sequence and torque values are maintained to ensure proper head gasket performance.

5. AIR bracket.
6. Dipstick tube and the engine lift bracket.
7. L/H exhaust manifold.
8. Intake manifold and the rocker arm covers.
9. Engine coolant and the negative battery cable.
