E016
ECM Code E016:
DFI Fuel Pump Circuit:
DESCRIPTION:
The ECM monitors vehicle electrical system voltage or battery voltage indirectly by monitoring the voltage on the fuel pump feedback CKT 120B. The voltage readings taken by the ECM are used to detect fuel pump voltage faults and to modify injector pulse width as system voltage varies; the ECM increases injector pulse width as system voltage decreases. Code E016 is set when the ECM sees low or high system voltage with an engine speed high enough to allow almost full generator output.
TEST CONDITIONS:
1. Code E018 and E020 Clear.
2. Engine speed greater than or equal to 800 RPM.
3. Not Cranking (Crank input to ECM at 0 volts).
FAILURE CONDITIONS:
Voltage on Fuel Pump Feedback to ECM less than 10.0 volts or greater than 16.0 volts for 5 seconds or more.
ACTION TAKEN:
1. ECM turns on "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" telltale.
2. ECM commands BCM to display "SERVICE CAR SOON" message on CCDIC.
3. ECM turns off EGR solenoid, canister purge solenoid and both AIR solenoids.
4. ECM disables Cruise Control.
5. ECM disables VCC for entire key cycle.
NOTES ON FAULT TREE:
1. Checking for generator output high or low at idle.
2. Checking for insufficient generator output when at high electrical loads.
3. Checking for generator output voltage too high.
4. Checking for proper voltage at fuel pump test point (on fuel pump power circuit).
5. Checking for open between ECM pin D9 and fuel pump feed circuit.
NOTE ON INTERMITTENTS:
If history code E016 is found, start engine, enter diagnostics and display ECM parameter ED1O Manipulate CKT 120A wiring from ECM pin D9 to the splice at CKT 120E. Watch for the parameter to drop to less than 10.0 volts. Many intermittent code EO16's can be traced to intermittent charging or battery system faults such as insufficient charging system output at high accessory loads or generator voltage out of regulation high.
Check for occurrence of "No Charge" telltale on. If BCM code B411 or B412 accompany history E016, diagnose using B411 or B412 trouble code charts. Check for low or overcharged battery.
Review the snapshot data parameters stored with this code to verify failure condition. If the failure condition is verified, check and repair intermittent wiring connection, or sensor.
