Timing Cover: Service and Repair

Fig. 6 Installing front cover:





1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2. Disconnect M.A.P. sensor and E.G.R. solenoid.
3. Remove coolant recovery tank and the serpentine belt adjusting pulley.
4. Remove alternator and disconnect electrical connectors.
5. Remove power steering pump bracket and disconnect heater pipe at bracket.
6. Raise and support vehicle, then remove inner splash shield.
7. Remove A/C compressor belt and the flywheel cover at transaxle.
8. Using tool J-23523-1 or equivalent, remove harmonic balance.
9. Remove serpentine belt idler pulley.
10. Remove pan to front cover attaching bolts and the lower attaching bolts.
11. Lower vehicle, then disconnect radiator hose at water pump.
12. Remove heater pipe at goose neck.
13. Disconnect bypass and overflow hoses.
14. Disconnect canister purge hose.
15. Remove upper front cover attaching bolts and the front cover.
16. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. With a clean sealing surface on both the front cover and oil pan, apply a continuous 3 mm bead of suitable sealant to oil pan surface of front cover.
b. Torque bolts to specifications, Fig. 6.
