Paint (Exterior) - Blushing

Bulletin No.T 86-7
File in Group 10
Number 74
Corp. Ref. No. 805 9023
Date Oct. '85
SUBJECT: BLUSHING EXTERIOR DISPERSION LACQUER PAINT

MODELS AFFECTED: 1985 CIMARRON

The exterior paint on some 1985 Cimarrons that were finished with Bordeaux Red (code 79-WA- 8529) Dispersion Lacquer may exhibit a blushing condition. Blushing can best be described as a white hazy or milky discoloration and is evidenced by comparing the appearance of the outside rearview mirrors or soft body fascia to adjacent body parts. This condition is due to paint that was contaminated in the paint manufacturing process. The vehicles affected were built at the Janesville Assembly Plant from April 11 through July 30, 1985, with VIN Numbers FJ509935 through FJ518610.

A finish that shows blushing can be polished to a high luster, but will show signs of blushing within a few days.

To correct the condition, the entire vehicle must be color coated, except the soft fascia.

Repair procedure:

1. Detach all readily removable exterior items (moldings, taillamps, grilles, emblems, etc.).

2. Thoroughly clean the exterior with a detergent and water followed by a Lacquer and enamel cleaner, (DuPont 3939S or equivalent).

3. Wet sand with 600 or finer paper.

4. Reclean exterior with Lacquer and enamel cleaner (DuPont 3939S or equivalent) and tack off.

5. Apply 3 to 5 coats of acrylic Lacquer (DuPont Lucite, code 79-B8509 or equivalent) so that a minimum film build of 1.0 mil. is maintained after compounding.

6. Allow to dry overnight and compound.

7. Replace all removed exterior items.
