Engine - Hard Start/Rough Idle/Black Exhaust Smoke

Bulletin No. T 84-7
File In Group 6C
Number 66
Date Oct. '83

SUBJECT: STICKING EGR VALVE - 1983 2.0L WITH VACUUM PUMP

MODELS AFFECTED: 1983 CIMARRON

Comments of hard starting, rough idle, black smoke and/or intermittent check engine light (code 33) on 1983 Cimarrons (with vacuum pumps), built before B.P. 418443, may be caused by the EGR valve sticking in a wide open position after engine shutdown. All Cimarrons built before B.P. 410423 were equipped with vacuum pumps. Following B.P. 410423, only cars with Cruise Control were equipped with vacuum pumps.

FIGURE 1 - EGR Valve Inspection:

This condition can be eliminated by installing an EGR valve vacuum bleed connector (P/N 14079541) in the EGR signal vacuum line at the EGR valve (see Figure 1). This bleed will allow trapped vacuum to dissipate after engine shutdown and the EGR valve to return to a closed position. Proper EGR operation can be determined by the diagnostic chart.
